Senior Safety Specialist

Your new role Through a strong working partnership with assigned business locations, the Sr. Safety Specialist takes all steps necessary to ensure the safety of the company personnel and assets are in compliance with legislative requirements. You will perform an accomplished level of responsibilities in the following areas: Occupational health and safety, risk assessment, site audit, Behavioral Safety, Root Cause Analysis, Process Safety Management, Injury Management, Driving Safety Management, dangerous goods, Canada Labour Code Part II and WHIMIS. Description : General Accountabilities
  • Act as the workplace occupational health & safety (OHS) champion and leader, ensuring appropriate HSE standards are developed, implemented, adhered to, and continuously look for ways to improve them within our health and safety management system.
  • Promote the ongoing organizational effectiveness of the OHS program and a culture of safety. Lead the development and execution of strategic plans and major activities that support our occupational health & safety (HSE) management system.
  • Lead the development, review, and revision of health and safety policies, and safe operating procedures in consultation with management and union health & safety representatives, including but not limited to protocols for HSE audits and safety inspections.
  • Act as the lead safety trainer, developing and conducting HSE hazard-specific training courses based on regulatory and industry best practices, or ensure approved external trainer providers are utilized where required. Act as an expert information resource and/or management lead to the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees, employees, and leaders, in the interpretation and application of internal safety standards, and external HSE regulations; including subject matters where situations are unique, complex or higher risk.
  • Manage and ensure compliance with Ministry of Labour orders and any corrective actions required.
  • Act as a mentor to health & safety representatives and JHSC committee members.
  • Provide advice, guidance and instruction on a wide range of health and safety areas to ensure a complete understanding of the company’s strategies, policies, procedures and practices.
  • Assist Supervisors in resolving compliance issues and work refusals.
  • Monitor changes in internal and external environments, provide analysis and make recommendations for improvement to address any new/emerging HSE hazards.
  • Assess risks, and impacts and ensure compliance with existing safety practices and standards.
  • Research and stay current with health and safety industry trends; identify opportunities to be innovative in program development and delivery.
  • Establish measurable goals based on leading Health and Safety indicators and communicate health and safety information.
  • Act as the primary representative to outside agencies on Health and Safety matters.
  • Collaborate with Corporate partners to lead the implementation of occupational health and safety programs.
  • Review all incident and near miss reports and make recommendations to prevent re-occurrence and assist in the development of corrective action.
  • Identifying key risks, recommending, and preparing action plans, and working with the operations team to ensure full compliance.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of health and safety policies and programs using a risk-based management approach to identify internal hazards and risk levels.
  • Facilitate the development of Group health and safety objectives and targets for all staff.
  • Ensure that the health and safety programs are appropriately documented and communicated to employees.
  • Coordinate the implementation of the Health and Safety Managed System with other programs to promote an integrated managed process.
  • Liaise with various authorities and groups (Transport Canada, Labour Canada (ESDC), Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Ministry of Environment and Energy, WCB, vendors, etc.) on our behalf
  • Represent the company during external audits, inspections, hearings, at meetings, and seminars
  • Lead the development and ensures consistency of company policies, programs and procedures including those related to regulatory compliance
  • Be the SME of legislated requirements, taking a lead role in establishing internal standards including consulting with the Safety Advisor as required
What you’ll need to succeed
  • A Bachelor's Degree/ Diploma in Human Resources background or related field
  • Professional accreditation (CRSP, CHRP, CCPE, CHSC, CHSMSA, CRST) plus 4 years of experience
  • Strong working knowledge of the Canada Labour Code Part II, IATA and TDG Dangerous Goods Regulations, Workers Compensation Legislation, Behavioural Based Safety, and Injury Prevention. Building codes and fire codes
  • Diversified professional expertise in the majority of these areas, Occupational Health and Safety,
  • Dangerous Goods, Fire Prevention, Vehicle or Driving safety
  • Sound understanding of government legislation and the interpretation and application of constantly changing and evolving legislation to company total reward programs/ policies.
  • Excellent presentation, communication (written & verbal) & human relations skills
  • Strong analytical, statistical & organizational skills
  • Strong investigative skills – a Sherlock Holmes hat is optional but encouraged
